They make their way upstairs to the entrance to find
that they have been locked in. Morlaf casts Rope
Trick above the doors and they all climb up the rope and then lower it on
the other side. As they climb down they hear the high pitched squeaking from
behind them and bats come flying out of the extra dimensional space behind
them. Morlaf cancels the spell before too many come through and the are several
little thuds from behind the door as they fly into the ceiling. The bats the
got through harry the group but are quickly knocked out of the air with
professional skill. It is only then that they see the corpses of the horses;
they have been ripped to shreds by something large. It is then that the Shadow
Massif strikes from the darkness. The dark canine leaps at Osgoth and tears at
him but they all react quickly and it is quickly surrounded. It roars defiance
and they quake at the sound but with great strength of will most stand their
ground and it is put down.
Hydrix casts Spider Climb and scales the high tower
on the left of the keep. She peeks in the only lighted window at the top but
can’t make anything out with it being all steamed up. On her way down she
glances in one of the arrow slits and pauses, and then continues on as if
nothing had happened.
Makfire shoots an arrow through the glass. After a
moment a voice shouts down “Oi! Stop that.”
He does it again and is rewarded by getting the
group dowsed in burning oil. They leave the courtyard with one final arrow
going though the window from Makfire.
They make camp for the remainder of the night around
the carriage and it isn’t long before the gargoyle sees Trixie approach. He
wakes everyone up and the suspicious lot see through the disguise. In place a
Trixie there is a woman in a dark dress wearing her hair high; it is black with
a white streak near the centre.
“Why do you attack us?” demands Morlaf.
She smiles demurely, “I attack no von. I juft vant
to make sure you do not get any sleep.”
They all attack her as one. Not being able to get a
good go at the spell casters she turns into a mist and floats back to the
castle as dawn breaks.
They get 8 hours in and head right back into the
castle. Taking the left opening this time, Osgoth runs up the stairs closely
followed by Hydrix. The gargoyle and Makfire follow slowly while Morlaf stand
at the bottom not willing to venture back inside. Many flights up Osgoth enters
the top of the tower where a single steamy window looks out. Three very tall
women crowd around a bubbling cauldron; they grin at him in welcome.
“I am a traveller in need of succour.” he lies.
They look at each other. “You and your friends are
all welcome to stay here.” one invites with a gesture at the room in general.
“What this then?” growls Osgoth as he tries to push
the cauldron over onto one of the women. It is heavy with liquid though and he
only manages to cause it to wobble.
“That wasn’t very nice!” scowls one as she jumps back
to avoid being splashed. She gestures and a fog starts to billow from the
cauldron. The other two circle either side of it saying “We shall have to teach
you some manners.” They start raking at him with claw like hands. He leaps away
from them over the cauldron and hacks at the one calling for aid. She digs her
claws into Osgoth’s shoulders and pulls him apart with a great fountain of
blood and a tearing sound.
Hydrix runs out of the fog down the stairs past
those coming up.
The
gargoyle charges into the fog and rakes at the first woman that looms out at
him. She does the same back and in just a few seconds Makfire has the gargoyles
rent body tumbling down the stairs at him closely followed by half of Osgoth
leaving a bloody trail as his head bounces against the stairs. Makfire gives
the gargoyle a healing potion and the remnants of the ‘Dark Avengers’ flee the
tower.
